The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved plans Friday to load radioactive fuel into a second new nuclear reactor at Plant Vogtle Unit 4 in Georgia, a major step toward completing the project.
Southern Co.'s ( NYSE: SO ) Georgia Power unit has said it anticipates loading the fuel by the end of September.
The Vogtle complex is set to become the largest single power source in the U.S., but it has been burdened by delays and nearly $17B in cost overruns.
The opening of Vogtle Unit 3, another reactor at the same complex, was delayed last month due to a faulty seal identified during testing.
Unit 3 is approaching a Monday deadline to reach commercial operation; the reactor was producing power at 98% of capacity on Friday, according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission records.
