October 29th was a fascinating day for shareholders of Ryerson Holding Corporation ( RYI ) and Olympic Steel ( ZEUS ). Shares of the former plummeted 5.6%, while shares of the latter skyrocketed 23.4%. This came in response to news that the two firms will be merging in an all-stock deal, creating an industry giant that generates around $6.5 billion in revenue annually. When you dig into this transaction, I can understand why shareholders of Ryerson Holding Corporation might be a bit disappointed. In some respects, the firm is paying a bit of a premium for Olympic Steel. But at the same time, there is a good opportunity for some significant cost savings....
