VST - Texas grid operator urges power conservation as early heatwave strikes
aydinmutlu/E+ via Getty Images In its second conservation alert since February's massive blackout, Texas electric grid operator ERCOT warns residents to cut electricity use "as much as possible" during this week's expected intense heat, saying many forced generation outages and record June demand have squeezed the power supply. Parts of Texas likely will see temperatures top 100 degrees during the week, and summer does not officially begin until June 20. ERCOT says more than 11,000 MW of generation is down for repairs, and peak demand could surpass 73,000 MW today - topping the June record of 69,123 MW set in 2018 - which could strain the grid's capacity to generate power. "We will be conducting a thorough analysis with generation owners to determine why so many units are out of service," says Woody Rickerson, an ERCOT VP. "This is unusual for this early in the summer season." Potentially relevant tickers
