SRE - Texas power demand surges to new all-time high amid heat wave

Power use in Texas hit a new record high on Tuesday, the state's power grid operator said, as homes and businesses cranked up air conditioners for relief from sweltering temperatures.

ERCOT said power use reached a preliminary 80,828 MW at 6 p.m. CST, topping the grid's previous record of 80,148 MW set on July 20 a year ago, and forecasts peak demand will set a new record on Wednesday, but it reiterated it has enough resources to meet demand.

ERCOT bases demand benchmarks on one-hour increments, rather than instantaneous, or real-time, blips.

The high temperature in Houston hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Tuesday, Weather.com reported, compared with a normal high of 93.2 degrees for this time of year.
