The airline industry ( JETS ) is off to a difficult start in 2024 with 23 of the 26 names in the airline category trading in negative territory year to date.
Of the U.S. listed carriers, the top 10 worst performing names each are lower by at least 5% in 2024 with the exception of the 10th ranked American Airlines Group ( NASDAQ: AAL ), which is lower in 2024 by 4.4% . See below the top 10 worst performing U.S. airline carriers so far in 2024.

No. 10: American Airlines Group ( AAL ) -4.4% in 2024.
No. 9: Southwest Airlines Co. ( NYSE: LUV ) -5% in 2024.
No. 8: Air Transport Services Group ( ATSG ) -5.2% in 2024.
No. 7: Alaska Air Group ( ALK ) -5.4% in 2024.
No. 6: Allegiant Travel Company ( ALG ) -5.8% in 2024.
No. 5: Frontier Group Holdings ( NASDAQ: ULCC ) -6.4% in 2024.
No. 4: JetBlue Airways Corporation ( NASDAQ: JBLU ) -7.1% in 2024.
No. 3: Sun Country Airlines Holdings ( SNCY ) -7.7% in 2024.
No. 2: Mesa Air Group, Inc ( MESA ) -11.2% in 2024.
No. 1: Surf Air Mobility Inc. ( SRFM ) -15.8% in 2024.
Bigger picture, over the past 6-months all ten names have traded to the downside and eight of the ten are lower over a one-year period -- the exceptions are Allegiant Travel Company ( ALG ) and American Airlines Group ( AAL ).
While outside of the top 10 worst performing airline names of 2024, some major carriers are still in the red this year. Some of those names include shares of Spirit Airlines ( SAVE ), Delta Air Lines ( DAL ), and United Airlines ( UAL ).
