UMC - TSMC hit with temporary power outage at semiconductor facility
Foundry giant TSMC (TSM) is currently "evaluating the impact" of a power outage at a chip plant at the South Taiwan Science Park. The outage was caused by construction workers accidentally severing an underground power line in the late morning. Most supply was restored by 7 p.m. local to all of the factories in the park. Some of TSMC's machines were able to continue running on back-up power. The outage comes during a global semiconductor shortage that has TSMC running at an over 100% capacity. The largest auto chip companies rely on TSMC for at least some of their production needs.TSM shares are currently up 0.8% pre-market to $122.20. Foundry peer UMC (UMC), which also has fabs at the science park, is down 3% to $9.27.The semiconductor shortage was recently hit by a temporary suspension of Samsung's foundry in Austin, Texas, due to weather-related power outages and a fire at a Renesas fab.
