SSNLF - TSMC producing MediaTek 5G smartphone chips taking on Qualcomm
Taiwanese fabless semiconductor giant MediaTek has tapped TSMC (TSM) to manufacture its newest chips for premium 5G smartphones.TSMC will use its 6nm process and MediaTek would be among the first high-volume customers using the technology.MediaTek announced the new Dimensity 1100 and 1200 smartphone chips today, the latest move into the premium smartphone space dominated by Qualcomm (QCOM).TSMC rival Samsung ([[SSNNF]],[[SSNLF]]) is making Qualcomm's chips using its 5nm technology.MediaTek says the shift from 7nm to 6nm and general design improvements mean its new products 22% faster at computing tasks while using 25% less power.TSMC shares are up 0.8%. Qualcomm shares are up 1.6%.Earlier this month, news broke that Intel would turn to TSMC for CPU production help later this year. Testing will be done on the 5nm process before moving to 4nm for production.
