MESA - U.S. airline bookings are in the spotlight as summer season ends
Bank of America reports airline tickets sales for the week ending August 29 improved to -51.9% the 2019 level from -61.5% for the week prior. The firm notes that a slight shift in the Labor Day holiday and the impact of Hurricane Dorian in 2019 impacted the comparison. "When we compare net sales vs the week leading up to Labor Day in 2019, system net sales were down - 63.6%, which is more comparable to last week’s data. Similarly domestic and international tickets sold fell -2.0% (-29.3% last week) and -25.8% (-46.1% last week)." U.S. airline website visits were off 4% for the week ending September 1 compared to flat last week. The only airlines to remain above 2019 levels this week are Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) (+8%) and JetBlue (NASDAQ:JBLU) (+1%), while Allegiant Travel (NASDAQ:ALGT) is flat vs. the 2019 level.
