CARR - U.S. shipments of HVAC equipment slump from year earlier

U.S. shipments of some heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment fell in April from the same month a earlier.

Shipments of heat pumps dropped 16% from a year earlier to 381,000 in April, ending a two-month streak of gains, according to data from the Air-Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

Shipments of central air conditioners fell 22% from a year earlier to about 712,000 units in April. AHRI’s data are an indicator of economic conditions and trends for manufacturers of air conditioning and heating equipment.

Shipments of heat pumps, which are all-in-one devices to heat and cool a home, had been forecast to expand amid supportive government policies. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 offered billions of dollars in rebates and federal tax credits to encourage the purchase of energy-efficient equipment. Meanwhile, gas appliances are at the center of a political debate about their effects on air quality and the climate.

Shipments of residential gas-storage water heaters fell 3.6% from a year earlier to about 357,000 units in April, while electric-storage water heater shipments declined 4.6% to about 400,000 units, the data show.
