BIPC - U.S. weekly rail traffic falls 1.2% year-over-year

- The Association of American Railroads [AAR] reported on Wednesday that for the week ending October 28, 2023, U.S. rail traffic was 499,389 carloads and intermodal units, down 1.2% year-over-year.
- Total carloads for the week fell 4.2% to 227,575 carloads, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 271,814 containers and trailers, rising 1.5%.
- Three of the 10 carload commodity groups posted a year-over-year increase for the week. They included chemicals, petroleum & petroleum products, and farm products excl. grain, & food.
- Commodity groups that fell year-over-year for the week included coal, nonmetallic minerals, and grain.
- North American rail volume for the week, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads was 339,642 carloads, a decrease of 2.6%, and 353,354 intermodal units, down 0.8%.
- Canadian railroads reported 95,880 carloads for the week, up 3.8%, and 70,444 intermodal units, down 7.1%.
- Mexican railroads reported 16,187 carloads for the week, down 13.5%, and 11,096 intermodal units, down 11.5%.
