CSX - U.S. weekly rail traffic falls 2.4% from year ago

- The Association of American Railroads ( AAR ) reported on Wednesday that for the week ending July 15, 2023, U.S. rail traffic was 478,153 carloads and intermodal units, down 2.4% Y/Y.
- Total carloads for the week rose 0.9% to 225,609 carloads, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 252,544 containers and trailers, dropping 5.3%.
- Seven of the ten carload commodity groups reported an Y/Y increase for the week. They included motor vehicles and parts, nonmetallic minerals, and petroleum and petroleum products.
- Commodity groups that fell year-over-year for the week included grain, forest products, and coal.
- North American rail volume for the week, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads was 329,965 carloads, up 0.9%, and 313,660 intermodal units, down 12%.
- Canadian railroads reported 87,054 carloads for the week, up 1.2%, and 49,682 intermodal units, down 36.3%.
- Mexican railroads reported 17,302 carloads for the week, flat Y/Y, and 11,434 intermodal units, down 4.6%.
