BIPC - U.S. weekly rail traffic falls 2.7% year-over-year

- The Association of American Railroads ( AAR ) reported on Wednesday that for the week ending August 19, 2023, U.S. rail traffic was 478,853 carloads and intermodal units, down 2.7% year-over-year.
- Total carloads for the week fell 0.6% to 228,972 carloads, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 249,881 containers and trailers, dropping 4.6%.
- Four of the 10 carload commodity groups posted a year-over-year increase for the week. They included motor vehicles and parts, coal, petroleum and petroleum products.
- Commodity groups that fell year-over-year for the week included grain, forest products, and farm products excluding grain, and food.
- North American rail volume for the week, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads was 335,400 carloads, an increase of 0.9%, and 329,819 intermodal units, down 6.8%.
- Canadian railroads reported 90,149 carloads for the week, up 3.1%, and 71,108 intermodal units, down 12.6%.
- Mexican railroads reported 16,279 carloads for the week, up 11.5%, and 8,830 intermodal units, down 16.2%.
