BIPC - U.S. weekly rail traffic falls 3.2% from year ago

• The Association of American Railroads ( AAR ) reported on Wednesday that for week ending June 24, 2023, U.S. rail traffic was 469,453 carloads and intermodal units, down 3.2% year-over-year.
• Total carloads for the week fell 0.4% to 222,431 carloads, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 247,022 containers and trailers, dropping 5.5%.
• Five of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an year-over-year increase for the week. They included motor vehicles and parts, metallic ores and metals, and miscellaneous carloads.
• Commodity groups that fell year-over-year for the week included grain, chemicals, and and farm products excluding grain, and food.
• North American rail volume for the week, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads was 328,426 carloads, an increase of 1% year-over-year.
• Canadian railroads reported 89,146 carloads for the week, up 1.4%, and 69,439 intermodal units, down 9.5%.
• Mexican railroads reported 16,849 carloads for the week, up 20.9%, and 11,426 intermodal units, up 13.1%.
