BIPC - U.S. weekly rail traffic falls 4.2% year-over-year

• The Association of American Railroads ( AAR ) reported on Wednesday that for the week ending August 12, 2023, U.S. rail traffic was 472,498 carloads and intermodal units, down 4.2% year-over-year.
• Total carloads for the week fell 3.0% to 224,412 carloads, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 248,086 containers and trailers, dropping 5.3%.
• Three of the 10 carload commodity groups posted a year-over-year increase for the week. They included motor vehicles and parts, petroleum and petroleum products, and miscellaneous carloads.
• Commodity groups that fell year-over-year for the week included grain, chemicals, and forest products.
• North American rail volume for the week, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads was 329,821 carloads, a decrease of 0.7%, and 329,158 intermodal units, down 7.5%.
• Canadian railroads reported 87,490 carloads for the week, up 1.9%, and 70,907 intermodal units, down 14.7%.
• Mexican railroads reported 17,919 carloads for the week, up 19.8%, and 10,165 intermodal units, down 3.6%.
