BIPC - U.S. weekly rail traffic jumps 2.8% year-over-year

- The Association of American Railroads [AAR] reported on Wednesday that for the week ending September 30, 2023, U.S. rail traffic was 500,154 carloads and intermodal units, up 2.8% year-over-year.
- Total carloads for the week rose 3.7% to 235,988 carloads, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 264,166 containers and trailers, jumping 2%.
- Nine of the 10 carload commodity groups posted a year-over-year increase for the week. They included metallic ores and metals, chemicals, motor vehicles and parts.
- The commodity group that fell year-over-year for the week was grain.
- North American rail volume for the week, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads was 350,483 carloads, an increase of 3.6%, and 346,771 intermodal units, down 1.5%.
- Canadian railroads reported 97,896 carloads for the week, up 2.1%, and 70,662 intermodal units, down 13.6%.
- Mexican railroads reported 16,599 carloads for the week, up 12.2%, and 11,943 intermodal units, up 7.4%.
