BIPC - US weekly traffic down marginally on intermodal volume drop
The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reports total weekly US rail traffic down 0.5% Y/Y to 515,849 carloads and intermodal units for the week ending September 18, 2021. Total Carloads were up 4.2% Y/Y to 241,910; intermodal volume down 4.4% Y/Y to 273,939 containers and trailers. 6 of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an increase with commodity groups that posted Y/Y decreases included motor vehicles and parts; petroleum and petroleum products, and grain. Commodity groups that posted a Y/Y increase include coal, nonmetallic minerals and metallic ores and metals. Region-wise weekly data: North America, 697,130 carloads and intermodal units (-2%); Canadian railroads, 81,835 carloads (+1%) and 70,024 intermodal units (-9.2%); Mexican railroad, 16,697 carloads (-5.9%) and 12,725 intermodal units (-25.7% Y/Y). Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 39 weeks of 2021 was ~19.82M carloads and intermodal units, an increase of 9% compared to last year.
