SQNNY - Videogame sales rise 7%; 'Madden' takes annual place atop game chart
Videogame industry sales rose again in August - another sign of sector strength as it's the fourth straight month of year-over-year gains against some pretty tough COVID-19 pandemic comparisons from 2020. Overall sales rose 7% from August 2020, to reach an August-record $4.4 billion, according to NPD Group. Sales for July had risen 10% from the previous year. That brings year-to-date industry spending to $37.9 billion, up 13% from the same period last year and an impressive buildup as data keeps lapping the March 2020 beginning to America's stay-at-home life. As has been the case since next-gen game consoles were introduced late in 2020, hardware sales recorded another jump, up 45% to $329 million. And core videogame content sales rose another 5%, to $3.878 billion. Accessory sales were flat at $164 million. Hardware sales are up 49% year-to-date, to $3 billion.
