NERD - Videogame sales speed up rising for sixth month aided by hardware and 'Far Cry 6'
Videogame sales accelerated again in October, rising for a sixth straight month buoyed by another big gain in hardware and a double-digit increase in core game content revenues. Overall, sales were up 16% year-over-year to $4.388 billion in October, according to NPD Group - an October record. It brings year-to-date industry spending to $46.7 billion, up 12% from the same 10-month period last year. Sales had ticked up 3% year-over-year in September, up 7% in August, and rose 10% in July, even as the industry lapped some tough COVID-19 pandemic comparisons. Hardware sales rose 82% to $472 million, even with next-generation consoles from Sony (NYSE:SONY) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) in very short supply. Sales of accessories rose 5% from the prior year to $158 million. And core videogame content sales were impressive, rising 11% (by $377 million) to $3.758 billion.
