A drifting New Year's Eve stock market kicked into bullish mode in the last two hours of trading Thursday, helping the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrials to finish 2020 at record highs. The Nasdaq, the best performer of the major averages for the full year, lagged on the day after hitting an all-time high earlier in the week. The moves came after the release of a better than expected report on U. S. weekly jobless claims, which declined for a second straight week to 787,000. For the full year, the S&P gained 16%, the Dow added about 7% and the Nasdaq jumped 44%, which matched the biggest yearly gain for the tech-heavy index since 2009.
