EGRNY - WeChat said to block China Evergrande messaging groups - Reuters
Members of at least eight instant messaging groups say Tencent Holdings' (OTCPK:TCEHY) WeChat is blocking new messages sent among groups of people in China owed money by debt-laden property developer China Evergrande (OTCPK:EGRNF) (OTCPK:EGRNY), Reuters reports. The groups, each with about 200-500 members, had communicated with each other about members' claims and coordinated protests. They said they were unable to send new message to the groups as of Tuesday morning. Evergrande (OTCPK:EGRNF), with $305B in debt, failed to make an interest payment to offshore bond holders last week. But within China, angry homeowners and retail investors have been protesting in several cities in recent weeks as the company has been unable to deliver homes already paid for or provide returns on investments already made. Two WeChat users told Reuters that they received an error message saying "limits have been placed on this group because it violates relevant rules and regulations."
