WhatsApp (FB +2.4%) is delaying a controversial update to its privacy policy after users were confused (and many flocked to download rival apps). Users were recently asked to accept policy changes by Feb. 8 or lose access to WhatsApp; the new policy would allow WhatsApp to share data with its behemoth parent as well as other companies from business chats where users talk with a company's customer service platform. But many users read the change as affecting their personal conversations, which are end-to-end encrypted. And that's led to an explosion in downloads of private messaging rivals Signal and Telegram.
