CRWD - White House establishes cybersecurity initiative for infrastructure companies
MF3d/E+ via Getty Images The White House advises federal agencies to develop voluntary cybersecurity goals for critical infrastructure companies as the Biden administration mulls mandatory requirements. In a new national security memorandum, the White House establishes an Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity Initiative with the primary objective of defending critical infrastructure by "encouraging and facilitating deployment of technologies and systems that provide threat visibility, indications, detection, and warnings, and that facilitate response capabilities for cybersecurity in essential control system and operational technology networks." The initiative follows the high-profile Colonial Pipeline breach earlier this year by ransomware-as-a-service group DarkSide. Colonial paid a ransom to receive the decrypting tool the day of the attack but the tool reportedly worked so slowly the pipeline still had to rely on its own backups to get back online.
