Antofagasta ( OTC:ANFGF ) said Tuesday it applied for an environmental permit to extend operations at its Zaldivar copper mine in Chile through 2051, with an extension plan that includes $1.2B in projected spending for the base metals project.
The miner is asking Chilean regulators to prolong the mine's operations by 26 years; it then would implement a mine closure plan, estimated to last until 2054, the company said, adding the extension would not modify its previously approved production capacity.
The mine's current environmental impact study permit will expire in 2025.
