Summary
- The Allspring Multi-Sector Income Fund offers a high level of current income with an 8.75% yield, surpassing U.S. Treasury securities and most junk bonds.
- The fund's yield is lower than its peers, which may deter investors seeking a very high level of income.
- The fund's past performance has been underwhelming, with a decline of 29.19% over the past three years, but this may not accurately reflect investor returns due to the fund's distribution policy.
- The fund claims to have a global focus, but it is overweight to the United States. It is therefore not a great way to diversify away from the country.
- The fund failed to cover its distribution for the two most recent fiscal years, but seems to be improving and currently trades at a discount.
The Allspring Multi-Sector Income Fund ( ERC ) is a closed-end fund that income-focused investors can purchase in pursuit of their goal of achieving a high level of current income from the assets that they have accumulated over the years. The fund does reasonably well at this task, as it currently boasts an 8.75% yield that is substantially above that of U.S. Treasury securities or indeed most bonds. After all, the ten-year U.S. Treasury only has a 4.385% yield right now. Even the supposedly high-yielding Bloomberg High Yield Very Liquid Index ( JNK ), which tracks junk bonds, has an average yield to maturity of 7.98% right now. That is clearly well below what the Allspring Multi-Sector Income Fund is currently yielding.
However, the current yield of the Allspring Multi-Sector Income Fund is a bit lower than that of its peers:
