Thematic and macro investing both have a rather mixed reputation. On the one hand, when applied properly and timed correctly, they can deliver superb returns. Good examples are the electric vehicle theme in 2020 and the AI theme in 2024. On the other hand, when things go wrong, losses can be horrific, especially if a certain strategy is constrained by rigid rules and does not have the luxury of rotating between themes to minimize the damage from bearish forces....
