The unemployment rate in the United Kingdom increased by 0.1 percentage points on the quarter to 3.8 percent in December 2022 to February 2023, the highest level since the second quarter of 2022 and slightly beating market consensus of 3.7 percent.
- The number of unemployed went up by 49 thousand to 1.29 million driven by people unemployed for up to six months, while employment levels rose by 169 thousand to 32.95 million thanks to part-time employees and self-employed workers.
- Total pay growth held steady at 5.9 percent year-on-year in the three months to February, while in real terms,wages dropped by 3.0 percent, the largest decline since the February to April 2009 period.
