Shares of Meta Materials (NASDAQ: MMAT) , a researcher into materials for use in various high-tech applications , were shooting more than 20% higher as of 1:20 p.m. EDT today. It's not entirely clear why, but this week's announcement out of Stanford University might have something to do with it.

On Monday, Meta Materials announced that it has joined the Stanford University SystemX Alliance industry affiliates program. This provides member companies with what it says is "a highly leveraged and cost-effective method to sponsor pre-competitive, collaborative research at Stanford."
