Credit Fear Is a Big Deal
Last Thursday, regional banking stocks had a nasty pullback. The iShares U.S. Regional Banks ETF ( IAT ) also was down 6%. The panic selloff was caused by credit fears from Zions Bancorporation ( ZION ) and Western Alliance Bancorporation ( WAL )'s recent announcements. The Cboe VIX index spiked to nearly 28 during last Friday midnight, up about 40% in less than 24 hours. Both companies suffered from bad loans funding to distressed commercial mortgages. Not surprisingly, the market sold everything first and asked questions later....
