Review – Meet the New Boss
Without doubt, the most consequential market day of the first quarter occurred on April 2 (yes, you read that right), when the Trump administration announced its anticipated tariff regime. Investors were caught surprised by the would-be reach – very few countries were left out – and magnitude of the levies to be assessed – well north of expectations – and reacted adversely. With these so-called Liberation Day tariff proposals, nearly all 2025 prior market storylines and developments were rendered moot, particularly the expansion narrative and complacent market pricing that saw equity markets reach fresh all-time highs in February. Instead, the announcement punctuated what had been a volatile end to the quarter, where the administration’s deliberate upheaval of the status quo and emphasis on government efficiency finally took a toll on risk appetite and lifted anxiety among businesses and households. The waning outlook was highly visible in weakening survey data and downward revision to GDP expectations, in addition to a broad market reassessment of risk premia. As sentiment soured and this risk-off tone developed, U.S. Treasury yields rallied across the curve, led by the 43 basis point (bp) decline in the 5-Year, while 10-, and 30-Year yields fell by 37 and 21 bps, respectively....
