Valneva Provides Update on Chikungunya Vaccine IXCHIQ®

MWN-AI** Summary

Valneva SE, a specialty vaccine company, announced on January 19, 2026, the voluntary withdrawal of its biologics license application (BLA) and Investigational New Drug (IND) application for its chikungunya vaccine, IXCHIQ®, in the United States. This decision follows a suspension imposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2025, which was primarily due to concerns over a recently reported serious adverse event (SAE) involving a patient who had received IXCHIQ® along with two other vaccines. While the case may have a plausible connection to IXCHIQ®, causality has not yet been established.

Currently, there are no clinical studies actively administering IXCHIQ® to participants, as the IND is on clinical hold pending further investigation. Valneva plans to pursue post-marketing clinical activities contingent on discussions with regulatory authorities and maintains compliance with safety reporting protocols.

Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral disease, is characterized by debilitating joint pain and has been a growing public health concern since its resurgence in the early 2000s, impacting over 110 countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified chikungunya as a significant health threat, projecting that its economic and medical burdens will escalate due to climate change and the spread of the mosquito vectors.

Despite the challenges in the U.S., Valneva asserts that IXCHIQ® maintains a favorable benefit-risk profile for those in endemic regions and is committed to ensuring the highest safety standards in its products. The company continues to engage with health authorities globally, underscoring its focus on addressing unmet medical needs through specialized vaccine solutions.

MWN-AI** Analysis

Valneva SE's recent decision to voluntarily withdraw the Biologics License Application (BLA) and Investigational New Drug (IND) application for its chikungunya vaccine, IXCHIQ®, raises significant concerns for investors. This move follows a suspension of the license by the FDA and the placement of the IND on clinical hold due to a serious adverse event (SAE) reported outside the U.S. While Valneva maintains that the benefit-risk profile for IXCHIQ® remains favorable, the ongoing regulatory scrutiny introduces uncertainty into its future market viability.

Investors should consider the implications of the FDA's actions. The clinical hold indicates potential safety concerns, which can undermine public trust in the vaccine and impact sales. The growing scrutiny on vaccine safety, particularly amid increasing vaccine hesitancy, may exacerbate challenges for Valneva in the competitive vaccine market. Additionally, the decision to shift focus toward post-marketing clinical activities suggests that the company is reallocating resources, potentially signaling diminished confidence in the product's immediate market prospects.

Valneva does have a robust pipeline with other vaccine candidates, such as its Lyme disease vaccine under development with Pfizer. This diversification could mitigate risks associated with IXCHIQ®. However, investors should remain cautious. With the chikungunya virus affecting millions globally, the demand for effective vaccines remains high. If Valneva can resolve the regulatory challenges and demonstrate IXCHIQ®’s safety and efficacy in ongoing dialogues with authorities, the long-term potential remains.

In conclusion, prospective investors should closely monitor Valneva's response to the FDA's concerns and any updates regarding IXCHIQ®. A diversified vaccine portfolio offers potential growth, but the current setback necessitates a cautious investment approach.

  • Company voluntarily withdraws IXCHIQ BLA and IND in the U.S.
  • Continuing review of global product opportunity according to medical need and commercial attractiveness

Saint Herblain (France), January 19, 2026Valneva SE (Nasdaq: VALN; Euronext Paris: VLA), a specialty vaccine company, today announced that the Company has decided to voluntarily withdraw the biologics license application (BLA) and Investigational New Drug (IND) application for its chikungunya vaccine, IXCHIQ®, in the United States, following suspension of the license by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in August 2025. The Company had been awaiting further information with respect to its formal response to the vaccine license suspension. Valneva was recently informed of the FDA’s further decision to now place the Investigational New Drug (IND) on clinical hold pending an investigation of a newly reported foreign Serious Adverse Event (SAE).

There are currently no clinical studies involving IXCHIQ® that are actively vaccinating participants, and the Company intends to move forward with its planned post-marketing clinical activities, subject to further discussions with relevant regulatory authorities.

The SAE occurred outside of the U.S. and involved a younger adult who received three concomitant vaccines, including IXCHIQ®. Based on the information made available to Valneva, which the Company submitted to the U.S. Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) as well as to all other pharmacovigilance systems in accordance with the products license, the case may be plausibly related to IXCHIQ® vaccination, but causality has not been determined. The Company is actively seeking additional information to further characterize the case.

Valneva is committed to upholding the highest safety standards, and the Company continues to engage proactively with health authorities in all territories where IXCHIQ® is licensed, including Europe, Canada, the United Kingdom and Brazil. While IXCHIQ® is currently focused on travelers to regions where the virus is endemic, such as tropical and subtropical areas in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, and persons for whom vaccination is medically justified based on risk in accordance with the approved label and vaccination guidance, the Company continues to believe that IXCHIQ®’s benefit-risk profile also remains favorable for people living in the endemic and outbreak settings, where IXCHIQ® may be uniquely positioned as a highly durable single-shot vaccine.

About Chikungunya
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne viral disease spread by the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes which causes fever, severe joint and muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash. Joint pain is often debilitating and can persist for weeks to years1.
In 2004, the disease began to spread quickly, causing large-scale outbreaks around the world. Since the re-emergence of the virus, CHIKV has now been identified in over 110 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas2. Between 2013 and 2023, more than 3.7 million cases were reported in the Americas3 and the economic impact is considered to be significant. The medical and economic burden is expected to grow with climate change as the mosquito vectors that transmit the disease continue to spread geographically. As such, the World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted chikungunya as a major public health problem.4
