MCF Energy Update of Welchau-1 Testing: Well recovers gas at surface during unloading operations
MWN-AI** Summary
MCF Energy Ltd. has provided a promising update on the testing of the Welchau-1 well in Austria, which targets the Reifling Formation. Holding a 25% interest in the project, with ADX Energy as the operator, MCF has resumed operations that indicate significant potential for gas recovery. The Reifling Formation, noted for its substantial thickness of 128 meters, represents the shallowest carbonate reservoir encountered in the well.
During initial testing, MCF stimulated the well by injecting six cubic meters of acid, followed by a completion brine to ensure effective reservoir access. Upon swabbing the well—needed to remove hydrostatic pressure—fluids comprising brine, methane gas, and CO2 were successfully produced at the surface. This marks the first hydrocarbon recovery from the Reifling Formation, a notable development for the Welchau anticline.
The results are particularly encouraging as they suggest that the use of a minimal amount of acid has activated flow from a previously dormant reservoir. MCF plans to continue testing operations with further swabbing to facilitate continuous flow, aiming to establish ongoing production of gas, oil, or both. Produced fluids will be analyzed to determine their hydrocarbon content, while measurements of well bore pressure will assess connectivity with other formations.
The Welchau-1 well, situated in the Northern Calcareous Alps hydrocarbon fairway, was drilled to explore gas and condensate potential within fractured carbonate reservoirs. MCF Energy, founded in 2022, focuses on enhancing European energy security through responsible resource development, with several projects in Austria and Germany underway and more opportunities under evaluation.
MWN-AI** Analysis
MCF Energy's latest update on the Welchau-1 well presents a positive outlook for investors, as initial results indicate that the Reifling Formation is capable of hydrocarbon recovery. The recovery of methane gas during the unloading operations is particularly noteworthy, marking a significant milestone for this previously unresponsive reservoir. Given MCF’s 25% interest in the project, the potential for fruitful production could enhance its market position amidst a recovering European energy landscape.
The well's stimulation process, which utilized a relatively modest volume of acid, has effectively initiated gas flow to the surface. This approach suggests that further testing could yield even more encouraging results, as the ongoing operations aim to establish continuous production. Investors should closely monitor the outcome of these tests, especially regarding the hydrocarbon content and flow properties, as successful results may lead to increased investor confidence and potentially higher valuations.
Furthermore, the strategic positioning of MCF Energy in the Northern Calcareous Alps hydrocarbon fairway in Austria aligns with broader European energy security initiatives. As more countries push for natural gas development as a transitionary energy source, companies like MCF that are focused on regionally sourced hydrocarbons may find themselves at the forefront of this shift.
Given current commodity price fluctuations and heightened demand for natural gas in Europe, investors may view MCF not just as a speculative play but as a significant contributor to the region’s energy stability. However, potential investors should remain cautious about the inherent risks associated with exploration and regulatory compliance in the energy sector. Overall, MCF Energy seems poised for potential growth, warranting consideration for those looking to diversify into natural gas investments.

Canada NewsWire
VANCOUVER, BC, Feb. 16, 2026 /CNW/ - MCF Energy Ltd. (TSXV: MCF) (FRA: DC6) (OTCQX: MCFNF) is pleased to report initial results from the resumption of testing of the Reifling Formation at the Welchau-1 well in Austria. MCF holds a 25% economic interest in the Welchau project, with ADX Energy (ADX) as the operator with the remaining 75% interest.
The 128-meter thick Reifling Formation is the shallowest of four carbonate reservoirs intersected at Welchau-1. The well was stimulated by pumping six (6) cubic meters of acid followed by a completion brine volume into the well ensuring that all the acid was injected into the reservoir and allowed to soak before the well was flowed back. To initiate flow in the well it was necessary to unload the hydrostatic column of brine by swabbing the well. Swabbing resulted in brine, methane gas and CO2 being flowed to surface. The CO2 was the result of a reaction between the injected acid and the carbonate reservoir.
These initial results of testing are encouraging for the following reasons:
- The recovered well fluids include a hydrocarbon gas (methane) monitored at surface.
- The hydrocarbon recovery is the first from the Reifling Formation from within the Welchau anticline or the basin, and
- A relatively small amount of acid used for the stimulation of the Reifling Formation has resulted in flow from a previously unresponsive reservoir.
Ongoing testing operations will include further swabbing to clean up the well with a view to achieving continuous flow of oil, gas or oil and gas. Produced fluids will be sampled to determine hydrocarbon content and type. Well bore pressure measurements will be taken to confirm the pressure connectivity of the Reifling Formation with the remainder of the Welchau anticline. If continuous production is established the well flow rate will be measured.
It should be noted that well work over operations are twelve hours per day during week days. The well is currently shut in until swabbing operations resume.
The primary testing objectives are to determine the hydrocarbon content and flow characteristics of the Reifling formation. The Reifling Formation is interpreted to be at or near the oil water contact for a light oil accumulation in the Welchau anticline which is mapped approximately 500 metres updip of the Welchau 1 well (refer to Figure 1 and 2).
The Welchau-1 well is located in the Northern Calcareous Alps hydrocarbon fairway. It was drilled to test gas and condensate potential within the Middle Triassic fractured carbonate reservoir sequences below the Triassic Lunz-Partnach regional seal complex. The well drilled through a hydrocarbon-bearing complex fractured carbonate reservoir interval with continuous hydrocarbon shows.
