Olatorepatide Obesity Treatment Licensed by Regeneron Demonstrates Positive Phase 3 Results in Chinese Patients

MWN-AI** Summary

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. recently announced promising results from a Phase 3 clinical trial conducted by Hansoh Pharmaceutical Group evaluating olatorepatide, a novel dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist, for treating obesity in Chinese adults. The study, which enrolled 604 participants, demonstrated that those treated with olatorepatide for 48 weeks experienced significant weight loss, achieving up to 19% mean body-weight reduction. Additionally, an impressive 97% of participants reached at least 5% weight loss from baseline.

Conducted across 33 sites in China, the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial assessed varying dosages of olatorepatide (5 mg, 10 mg, and 15 mg) against a placebo. The drug not only met its co-primary endpoints by showing statistically significant weight reduction compared to placebo, but it also exhibited a favorable safety profile with fewer gastrointestinal adverse events. Notably, the incidence of nausea was less than 10%, and vomiting occurred in under 5% of participants.

George D. Yancopoulos, Regeneron’s President and Chief Scientific Officer, expressed encouragement with these results, emphasizing the potential of olatorepatide to enhance the daily treatment experience for patients struggling with obesity. Regeneron holds exclusive rights to develop and commercialize olatorepatide outside of Greater China, while Hansoh manages its rights within that region.

As part of its strategic focus on addressing the obesity epidemic, Regeneron plans to advance its global Phase 3 registrational program for olatorepatide later this year. This trial’s successful outcomes position the drug as a promising candidate in Regeneron’s broader pipeline aimed at combating obesity and related metabolic disorders. Further detailed data from the trial will be presented at an upcoming medical meeting, although regulatory evaluations of olatorepatide's safety and efficacy remain pending.

MWN-AI** Analysis

Recent positive Phase 3 trial results for Regeneron Pharmaceuticals’ olatorepatide, a dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist, offer compelling insights for investors focusing on the obesity treatment market. Results indicate significant weight loss of up to 19% in treated patients, alongside a favorable safety profile with lower gastrointestinal side effects compared to existing drugs in the category. These factors position olatorepatide as a promising contender in a market saturated with obesity treatments but lacking durable options.

As Regeneron gears up to initiate its global Phase 3 registrational program later this year, it is crucial for investors to consider several factors. Firstly, with obesity affecting over a billion individuals worldwide, the demand for effective treatments continues to grow. Regeneron's early success in China, where the trial showed up to 97% of participants achieving at least 5% weight loss, adds a valuable data point that underlines the drug's potential in a diverse population.

Additionally, Regeneron’s strategic in-licensing agreement with Hansoh Pharmaceutical enhances its global reach, allowing it to leverage Hansoh's insights in the Greater China market while retaining exclusive rights elsewhere. As a result, there is potential for robust revenue streams as olatorepatide approaches commercialization.

However, investors should remain cognizant of the inherent risks, including regulatory scrutiny, competitive pressures from existing and emerging therapies, and potential adverse events that could affect usage and acceptance.

Given the current landscape, investors may consider initiating or increasing their positions in Regeneron as olatorepatide progresses through clinical trials. The combination of innovative science and a solid market strategy underpins a favorable outlook for future growth. Therefore, attentive observation of upcoming trial presentations and market reactions is advised.

Patients treated with olatorepatide achieved up to 19% body-weight loss at week 48

Regeneron’s global Phase 3 registrational program to be initiated later this year

TARRYTOWN, N.Y., March 09, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --  Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: REGN) today announced Hansoh Pharmaceutical Group Company Limited has shared positive topline data from its Phase 3 trial in Chinese patients evaluating olatorepatide for the treatment of adults with obesity or who are overweight. Olatorepatide is a novel dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist for which Regeneron has exclusive clinical development and commercial rights outside of the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau as part of a strategic in-licensing agreement.

The Phase 3 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted by Hansoh enrolled 604 adults across 33 clinical sites in mainland China and evaluated once-weekly olatorepatide compared to placebo for 48 weeks. The study assessed four cohorts, including 5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg olatorepatide and placebo. The trial met its co-primary endpoints, demonstrating that olatorepatide compared to placebo led to a statistically significant reduction in body weight from baseline, and also a statistically significant greater proportion of participants who achieved at least 5% weight loss at 48 weeks. Participants treated with olatorepatide achieved up to a 19% mean weight loss from baseline at week 48. Responder analyses showed that up to 97% of participants achieved ?5% weight loss at week 48.

Olatorepatide demonstrated a favorable gastrointestinal tolerability in the trial, with lower rates of gastrointestinal adverse events and treatment discontinuation relative to those reported in other published Phase 3 dual incretin trials. The average incidence of nausea was below 10%, and the average incidence of vomiting below 5%.

“We are encouraged by the olatorepatide Phase 3 results in this Chinese population, which demonstrate not only meaningful weight loss but also a tolerability profile that could make a real difference in patients' day-to-day experience on treatment,” said George D. Yancopoulos, M.D., Ph.D., Board co-Chair, President, and Chief Scientific Officer at Regeneron. “We are on track to advance into our registrational program later this year and are eager to see the results from our pivotal trials.”

Detailed data from the trial are planned to be presented at an upcoming medical meeting. The safety and efficacy of olatorepatide have not been evaluated by any regulatory authority.

Hansoh holds the development and commercialization rights for olatorepatide in Greater China, while Regeneron holds the rights for development and commercialization outside Greater China.
