Smurfit Westrock: Building The Global Packaging Champion

Here at the Lab, we have done a deep dive into the paper market in recent years. We have long covered all the main companies, including International Paper , Mondi , PKG , and WestRock, before the merger with Smurfit Kappa. Regarding IP, we will check out the company and send a follow-up note shortly. However, IP plans to separate its US and European businesses just 12 months after the closing of the European acquisition (DS Smith). This was a sudden strategic pivot that we didn't like at all. For this reason, we are back to comment on Smurfit Westrock Plc ( SW ). With greater confidence, we believe the company will be the global leader in packaging, with operational synergies ahead and an ongoing margin improvement story. Given an attractive valuation, we last moved the company to a Strong Buy recommendation. This was actually a good call, with the share price up 9% (Fig. 1), even if shares have declined lately (with flattish YTD results). For this reason, we continue to see compelling upside risk-reward ahead....
