DIS - 'Barbie' rolls on entering all-time top 20 U.S. movie grosses

Barbie ( NASDAQ: WBD ) and Oppenheimer ( NASDAQ: CMCSA ) returned to the top two spots in movie ticket sales, showing that the two "Barbenheimer" hits have continued to dominate the summer in their fourth weekend in release.

Barbie ( WBD ) logged its fourth straight top finish, drawing $33.7M for a drop-off of just 36% from last week, Comscore reported. Oppenheimer ( CMCSA ) grossed $18.8M domestically, a similarly strong hold just 35% off of last week's gross.

Add on another weekend $45.1M overseas for Barbie, and another $31.9M internationally for Oppenheimer, and the films have piled up impressive 2023 totals.

In Barbie's case, its $526.3M domestic total puts it No. 2 for 2023 less than $50M behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie ( CMCSA ), a film it seems likely to surpass with a few more weeks playing in enough theaters -- and it entered the all-time top 20 in domestic grosses. Barbie's worldwide pile of $1.184B is second in 2023 to Mario's $1.356B.

The cumulative total also makes Barbie Warner Bros. ( WBD ) No. 2 grosser of all time.

As for Oppenheimer ( CMCSA ), it's hit $264.3M domestically, according to Comscore, making it the seventh-biggest film of 2023 (Avatar: The Way of Water, a December 2022 release, has grossed $283.1M in calendar 2023, while The Little Mermaid reached $297.2M). And on a worldwide basis, the dramatic biography has hit $649M.

A few holdovers from last week tackled the crumbs. Third-best was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ( NASDAQ: PARA ) ( PARAA ), which grossed $15.8M for a two-week total of $72.8M, just ahead of Meg 2: The Trench ( WBD ), where $12.7M gave it a two-week total of $54.1M.

The weekend's best debut came from The Last Voyage of the Demeter ( CMCSA ), a Dracula -based vampire story that pulled a lackluster $6.5M in more than 2,700 theaters but still topped a third week of Haunted Mansion ( DIS ), with $5.6M.
