DIS - 'Jungle Cruise' set to lead box office but will it rock Disney's online strategy?
What's on deck for the box office this weekend, following signs of a new and counterintuitive summer cooling-off? This weekend it may be all about the content. The leader is certain to be Disney's (NYSE:DIS) Jungle Cruise, which is arriving in a pandemic-record 4,310 North American venues. And it's expected to hit some $25M-plus in grosses, or $30M-plus on the high end. That's not a lot for an expensive film (estimated to cost $200M to make), compared to this summer's success stories in Black Widow (also Disney's, which opened to $80M) and F9 (CMCSA; which opened to $70M in June). On the other hand, Jungle Cruise is also part of Disney's online release strategy, appearing today on Disney Plus Premier Access for a $29.99 surcharge.
