Abiomed (NASDAQ:ABMD) said the first patient in Japan was treated successfully with Impella 5.5 with SmartAssist. Impella 5.5 with SmartAssist is a minimally-invasive forward flow heart pump. The company said first Impella 5.5 with SmartAssist procedure in Japan took place at Osaka Police Hospital when an 82-year-old man was treated for cardiogenic shock. Globally, more than 5K patients have been treated. The device was approved in the U.S. in 2019.
