Investors can choose from a variety of ETFs to take advantage of the surprising boom in consumer spending. Retail sales for September trounced forecasts according to data released Friday. Retail sales are now up year-over-year for five consecutive months and at new highs, market observers point out. It would be the first time sales have shown such an upward trajectory of such a magnitude in a recession, and may be a signal it has ended.With unemployment near all time highs, expectations for consumer spending have been muted. The surprisingly strong results, though, have made the consumer sector a standout over the last year. Investors who want exposure to the booming consumer may consider several options with different tradeoffs. All have outperformed the 16% returns by the S&P 500 over the last year.
