- Protection from the relatively new COVID-19 bivalent vaccines can wane as soon as two month after administration, according to a Finnish study.
- It also found that among chronically ill adults between the ages of 18 and 64, the bivalent vaccine did not reduce the risk of severe COVID outcomes.
- The results were based on data from a Finnish patient registry.
- The study was published as a preprint in medRxiv and the results have yet to be peer reviewed.
- "Because we found signs of waning already after 60 days since bivalent vaccination additional boosters for the elderly could be an option at some time point in the future," the authors concluded . "However, the need for further boosting should also be considered in the light of the epidemic 123 situation and economic analyses."
- In January, Moderna ( NASDAQ: MRNA ) CEO Stephane Bancel said that a second bivalent booster shot may be needed in the fall due to declining efficacy.
- In October 2022, another study found that the bivalent mRNA booster -- made by Moderna ( MRNA ) and Pfizer ( NYSE: PFE )/BioNTech ( NASDAQ: BNTX ) didn't outperform the original monovalent vaccines .
