The upswing has come despite the recent release of downbeat US retail sales data. Meanwhile, the sector has also faced a few notable earnings disappointments from the likes of TJX Companies ( TJX ) and Target ( TGT ).

Ahead of the results, UBS analyst Jay Sole struck a cautious tone. “Macy's is good at many things, but needs to be great at something important to its customers in order to differentiate and stop share loss,” he told clients . “We doubt this will change and thus expect M to fall short of the market's earnings expectations over time.”

However, this recent recovery has only regained a small portion of the losses recorded since shares reached their pandemic highs. Overall, the stock has cratered nearly 90% in the past year amid concerns about debt and flagging post-pandemic demand.

Shortly before the report, the company announced a 784-person headcount reduction . Meanwhile, the upcoming report will be the debut for newly-minted CFO Liz Coddington . Amid this transition, analyst Gary Alexander sees potential, saying in a recent report “this is Peloton’s rebound moment.”
