JEQ - Japan's factory output dips in November; retail sales surpass expectations

Industrial production in Japan declined by 0.9% month-over-month in November 2023, shifting from a final 1.3% growth in the prior month but coming less than market estimates of a 1.6% fall, preliminary data showed, marked the first decrease since August.

On a yearly basis, industrial output dropped by 1.4% in November, the first fall in three months, and after a 1.1% increase in October.

Separate data showed Japanese retail sales expanded 5.3 per cent in November from a year earlier. That was roughly in line with the median market forecast for a 5.0 per cent gain and marked the 21st consecutive month of expansion since March 2022.

Compared with the previous month, retail sales grew 1.0 per cent in November, following a 1.7 per cent decline in October, the data showed.
