GME - Pandemic new consoles push videogame sales to new December record $7.7B
Videogame sales jumped to a new December record during the all-important retail month - easily rising to the occasion of the arrival of a new generation of game consoles during a global pandemic. Overall sales rose 25% year-over-year to $7.7B for December, according to NPD Group. And with the full year wrapped, 2020 also set an all-time high with $56.9B in overall sales, up 27% from 2019. December's jump was again paced by gains in hardware sales, which rose 38% to $1.35B - nearly matching November's $1.415B in hardware sales. It was the highest hardware figure for December since 2013, when it hit $1.37B.
