OGI - Schumer admits marijuana legalization bill currently doesn't have the votes to pass
Tasos Katopodis/Getty Images News In an afternoon news conference, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said that as it stands now, there aren't enough votes to pass the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act, a bill that would federally legalize marijuana. Schumer emphasized that he wants feedback from Senate colleagues and other stakeholders on the legislation, which was just released today in a draft form. He added that once concerns are addressed and changes are suggested, he is confident the legislation will pass. Schumer skirted questions from the press on pursuing related legislation, such as the SAFE Banking Act, which passed the House in April, and is awaiting action in the Senate. "A banking bill deals with a small part of this, but not what needs to be done. We need a broad, comprehensive bill."
