WBA - U.S. Supreme Court extends pause on abortion pill curbs until Friday
2023-04-19 15:40:05 ET
- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito on Wednesday extended a temporary pause on lower court rulings that would have imposed restrictions on the abortion pill mifepristone to Friday at 11:59 PM EST.
- The decision gives more time for justices to consider the case following the Biden administration's request for a longer delay after Texas-based U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk suspended the FDA's approval of mifepristone early April.
- Last Friday, Alito issued a five-day stay order after the U.S. Justice Department and Danco Laboratories, the pill's manufacturer, filed emergency requests.
- In February, pharmacy chains including Walgreens ( WBA ), CVS ( CVS ), and Rite Aid ( RAD ) came under lawmaker scrutiny over the retail distribution of mifepristone which accounts for more than half of all U.S. abortions.
