NSC - U.S. weekly rail traffic falls 3.2% year-over-year

• The Association of American Railroads ( AAR ) reported on Wednesday that for the week ending July 22, 2023, U.S. rail traffic was 473,736 carloads and intermodal units, down 3.2% year-over-year.
• Total carloads for the week fell 1.3% to 222,454 carloads, while U.S. weekly intermodal volume was 251,282 containers and trailers, dropping 4.8%.
• Six of the 10 carload commodity groups posted an year-over-year increase for the week. They included motor vehicles and parts, nonmetallic minerals, and metallic ores and metals.
• Commodity groups that fell year-over-year for the week included grain, coal, and forest products.
• North American rail volume for the week, on 12 reporting U.S., Canadian and Mexican railroads was 330,062 carloads, an increase of 0.4%, and 331,880 intermodal units, down 6.3%.
• Canadian railroads reported 89,701 carloads for the week, up 4.8%, and 68,972 intermodal units, down 11.6%.
• Mexican railroads reported 17,907 carloads for the week, up 1.9%, and 11,626 intermodal units, down 3.3%.
