Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is postponing the return of its workers to offices indefinitely and will be giving all corporate and retail employees USD1,000 in order to purchase equipment for their home offices. Nevertheless, a letter to employees encouraged all workers to get the coronavirus vaccine and booster.
“Our offices remain open and many of our colleagues are coming in regularly, including our teams in Greater China and elsewhere,” CEO Tim Cook wrote. “As we look forward to more of our teams being together again, we will continue to make decisions based on local conditions and will be sure to notify you at least four weeks before beginning the pilot.”
The technology giant’s move comes amid a rise in Covid-19 infections as well as concerns of the spread of the Omicron strain. Moreover, the company reinstated its mask mandate in all US stores last week.
Apple disclosed that the USD1,000 is “intended to help you with your home workspace and can be used as you see fit.” An internal message to staff revealed that the funds would be paid out to them in their next paychecks, and would also be subject to tax and withholding. “Keep in mind that when you return to the office, you’ll be bringing your Apple-owned equipment back, so you should consider what you’ll want for your home workspace,” the message specified.
In the letter, Cook told employees that he was “grateful” for their compliance and flexibility. “You continue to prove how much we can accomplish when we take on our challenges with boldness, creativity and — most importantly — together.”
