BP ( NYSE: BP ) and Azerbaijan's Socar national oil company have participated for the first time in an Israeli licensing round for natural gas exploration, Reuters reported Monday, in the latest sign of growing international interest in the Eastern Mediterranean basin.
BP and Socar jointly placed a bid along with Israel's NewMed Energy ( OTCPK:DKDRF ) for two offshore blocks in the fourth licensing round that closed on Sunday, according to the report.
NewMed ( OTCPK:DKDRF ) is the largest stakeholder in the Leviathan offshore field operated by Chevron ( CVX ), which produces 12B cm of natural gas supplied to Israel, Egypt and Jordan.
The joint bid placed by NewMed ( OTCPK:DKDRF ), BP ( BP ) and Socar reportedly was for blocks in proximity to the Leviathan and Tamar fields.
