Chevron ( NYSE: CVX ) is preparing to bypass unions and put its pay offer to a direct vote of its Gorgon and Wheatstone workforce, as strike action at three major liquefied natural gas plants in Australia edges closer, Australian Financial Review reported Tuesday.
The Offshore Alliance, consisting of the Australian Workers Union and Maritime Union of Australia, told members that Chevron ( CVX ) was planning to put its proposed agreement to a direct vote and urged them to vote to endorse industrial action instead.
The Alliance reportedly met all day with Woodside Energy ( WDS ) trying to reach a deal at the North West Shelf platforms before 150 workers decide on potential strike action later this week.
The unions said they are seeking to lock in tier one wages and conditions, ensure more control over rosters for work-life balance and restrict the use of outside hiring.
Global markets are closely watching the bargaining, since the combined projects at Chevron ( CVX ) and Woodside ( WDS ) comprise ~11% of the global natural gas supply.
