- Baidu ( NASDAQ: BIDU ) is planning to roll out an artificial intelligence chatbot service similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, according to Reuters .
- The Chinese search giant aims to launch the service as a standalone application and gradually merge it with its search engine. To note, chatbots in China currently focus on social interaction, though ChatGPT performs better at more professional tasks, such as programming and essay writing.
- During an internal talk in December, Baidu ( BIDU ) CEO Robin Li cited ChatGPT as an example of where the company can take a lead in the industry, according to a transcript viewed by Bloomberg News.
- "I'm so glad that the technology we are pondering every day can attract so many people’s attention. That’s not easy," he declared, but cautioned that the commercialization of generative AI - by making it a "product that everyone needs" - could be challenging. In addition to Baidu ( BIDU ), several Chinese startups are exploring generative AI, and have attracted investors such as Sequoia and Sinovation Ventures.
- Apart from research in AI, Baidu is also developing autonomous driving technology . Last month, the Nasdaq said that Baidu ( BIDU ) would drop out of the Nasdaq 100 amid several changes to the closely watched index .
