Chinese organizations launched 79 large-language models (LLMs) in the past three years in an effort to develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, Reuters reported citing a report by research institutes run by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.
LLMs are a type of AI algorithms which use deep learning techniques and large data sets to summarize or generate content, among other things.
The development of LLMs entered an "accelerated" phase in 2020. In 2020, there were 2 LLMs released by Chinese organizations versus 11 in the U.S. However, in 2021, there were 30 LLMs released in each country, the report added.
In 2022, U.S. organizations released 37 LLMs compared to China's 28. This year, Chinese organizations lead with 19 LLMs, versus 18 by U.S. entities.
After OpenAI released ChatGPT, Chinese companies including Alibaba ( NYSE: BABA ) ( OTCPK:BABAF ), SenseTime Group ( OTCPK:SNTMF ) and Baidu ( NASDAQ: BIDU ) launched their own generative AI services .
The report noted that China's AI industry face hurdles as U.S.-led export controls limit Chinese organizations from accessing semiconductors used to train LLMs, among other computing work.
The report evaluated the 79 LLMs developed in China, and noted that even though there were 14 provinces and regions where this technology was developed, the joint development projects between academia and industry were not insufficient, the news agency added .
