New car registrations in the European Union increased by 17.8% in June to one million unit, the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) said on Thursday.
Battery-electric cars made up for 15.1% of new registrations in EU, up from 10.7%, a year earlier, overtaking diesel car share for the first time.
New hybrid-electric car remained another top choice, representing 24.3% of market share.
According to ACEA all EU markets grew, except Hungary. Germany showed a growth of nearly 25%, while Spain and France posted growth of 13.3% and 11.5% respectively.
“This growth can be attributed to the region’s rebound from a low comparison base last year, primarily driven by vehicle component shortages,” ACEA added.
New plug-in hybrid cars saw a rebound in June with registrations increasing by 13.4%. However, the overall market share declined to 7.9% from 8.2% a year earlier, despite the jump in registration.
